Hurf Sheldon is shown at the helm of his 1965 Daysailer "Silver Swan", west of Meyer's Point lighthouse, Cayuga Lake, Lansing, NY in October of 2002. Hanging off the back is a 1948 Montgomery Ward outboard. John Greenly (in O'Day Rhodes 19/keel) took the photo. Says Hurf, "We've had SS since 1985 - we've re-finished the mahagony floor boards and combing a couple of times - sails well - it gets used for training young sailors one week a year and just for kicks the rest of the time. My students routinely put the gunnels under - one year they put the cockpit under; I thought for sure we were going over - the boat swamped & immediately righted. "What do we do now Mr. Sheldon?" - "Sail & bail, sail & bail" (:-) We were back on our way after a few minutes." |

Luis Grass Rodriquez and 11 of his friends are shown motoring across the Florida Straits in their "truckboat", a converted 1951 Chevy pickup. Even the dullest vehicle attracts interest when it is apprehended floating in the middle of the Florida Straits, as this one was. The U.S. Coast Guard, citing safety concerns, removed the migrants and then sprayed the vehicle with 25mm machine-gun fire, causing it to blow up and sink.

Linden and Nancy Debassige are the proud owners of Emerald, a 1968 O'Day Outlaw. Says Linden "We purchased the last boat out of the mould from the original owner two years ago and we've loved it ever since. It is #89 and there was a mould breaking ceremony that the original owner attended. He was able to give us the original sales brochure from the boat show where he purchased it in Ontario. |
